Non-Violent Model Family

Phnom Penh – With a face full of confidence and speaking serious word, and clear, and loving education since her childhood, this is Ms. Sarun Dadina, 18, is in the 12th grade at Milky Way School in Phnom Penh. Ms. Sarun Dadina and four other friends are the winners of the Ministry of Education and Youth’s 2021 National Youth Debate Contest. Through this first prize, all the family members applauded for their hard work. Daughter.

As the team leader of the National Youth Debate Competition, Ms. Sarun Dadina acts as an excellent team coordinator who conducts research activities, facilitates how to work and manages all activities in the group with full of talent. What is behind Sarun Dadina’s courage and hard work?

Answering this question, Ms. Sarun Dadina confirmed with a smile that she was lucky to have received a good education from her parents since she was a child, and her parents always supported, and provided opportunities and encouragement.

The eldest daughter in the family said happily,

“When my parents taught me, she always used a positive teaching method, trying to explain each one to me more clearly on lessons! They tried to explain the exercises that I did not understand, and when I still did not understand, I felt bored, I could go out for a while and then continued studying with them.”

Ms. Sarun Dadina continued that since her childhood, parents have never used harsh words or violence in educating children in the family. Her parents always educate their children non-violently and always use words to encourage their children, especially to show their children many model activities.

Ms. Sarun Dadina reminded of her father, saying that,

“One day my father waited for more than an hour when I filmed together with friends. When finished filming, I ran to him and hug him and he smiled encouragingly to his child. I saw such a thing, so I was happy.”

Regarding positive parenting and educating children in the family, Mr. Un Saravuth, 51, the father of Sarun Dadina, said his daughter always respects and listens to her parents’ advice. He always educates his children in a non-violent way so that they can become good citizens in the society.

Speaking and gesturing to explain his intention to educate his children, Mr. Un Saravuth believes there is only one non-violent method of educating his children that helps his children to study well and always get good grades.

“Regarding the training of my child, I guided her from an early age until she won this award, I always pay attention to explaining, not using violence, forcing her to study! Because I had experience when I was young, my father taught me, he always used violence, hit me, and beat me. I could not learn. When he came, I was shaking, I did not want to know anything, I understand that the method of educating children that way is not worth it at all,”

said Mr. Un Saravuth.

Backing to talk to her mother about the activities of educating her children in the family, Mrs. Un Sophoan, 42 years old, confirmed that her family not only educates the children non-violently, but in family discussions, they never use inappropriate words to all family members.

Ms. Un Sophoan added,

“I never hit or use harsh words to my child, only say kind words to children, encourage them to study hard! I absolutely do not use violence to teach and use with them.”

Being reminiscent of the day when Ms. Dadina won the first prize in the 2021 National Youth Debate Contest of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports and looking forward holding a letter of commendation that she received, Mr. Un Saravuth spoke confidently to his daughter, saying that he did not expect that his brave daughter would dare to speak in public and be able to participate in the debate contest with other outstanding young people from other schools with special confidence, especially work well in the team.

Mr. Un Saravuth said,

“I believe my child can be a role model for other children and the younger generation! Later when she becomes a parent, she will not use violence in educating her children, and our society will have a lot of good human resources.”

Mr. Un Saravuth has two daughters in the family of Trapeang Thleung village, Choam Chao commune, Por Senchey district, Phnom Penh. Speaking of her eldest daughter, Sarun Dadina, she dreams of becoming a great math teacher because it is a subject she loves and trains the next generation to love math, science or STEM.

Venerable Nonn Rithy (monk), the trainer who helped train the candidates to prepare for the 2021 National Youth Debate Program, said that Dadina was a child with a gentle and intelligent nature, and received good education from her parents.

Venerable Nonn Rithy continued,

“This child received a good education from her family, not a violent education. Parents, guardians, teachers, as well as educators should use the new education method, which means that we should not be too strict or too easy and take the middle way! “A child is like white paper, when we put some color on it, they will stick to that stain forever”.

According to the Ministry of Women’s Affairs’ Positive Parenting Document, positive parenting help children to be brave, create self-idea, and be more responsible than those who were used to experience violence.

For positive parenting, parents, guardians or caregivers always want their children to have a good future, but sometimes their goals may not be achieved like they expected, these may be due to hereditary factors, family and society.

At the same time, lack of education, lack of skills, lack of ability or ability cannot help children become the people they really want. So, participation from all stakeholders such as national, sub-national level, local authority, society and families is a vital part that help educate children positively to become good human resources for the country’s future development.
