On 16 December 2022, Japan unveiled a new national security and defense strategy signalling one of the largest military build up since World War II. To illustrate, the government approved three strategic documents – the National Security Strategy, the National Defense Strategy, and Defense Buildup Program, which provide the highest level of strategic guidelines for the county’s defense, economic security, technology, cyber and intelligence over the next decade. Indeed, these documents are the new updates to Japan’s first ever National Security Strategy, which was formulated in 2013.
