Relief of Vidyādharas in Sambo Prei Kuk

In 1913, Henri Parmentier and his wife started to study the art and architecture of Sambo Prei Kuk and a book called L’art Khmer Primitif was publishedin 1927. A point described a temple in the north group N1, Henri Parmentier mentioned a relief as Apsaras flying overhead. In contrast to the figure of Apsaras, the flying figures are Vidyadharas.

Vidyādhara is a Sanskrit word that means a knowledgeable person or wisdom-holder. Vidyādharas are living among Kinnaras in Gandhamandhana and Himalaya, where is the place of Lord Shiva. Vidyādhara has been described differently in many scripts. In Agni Purana, Vidyādhara is described wearing garland in the sky and revealed with other semi-divine beings like Yakshas and Gandharvas. In Ramayana, Ram saw Vidyādhari living on Kraucha mountain at Citrakuta, Malabara valley. Additionally, they live in the Khandava forest. Vidyādharis or the women of Vidyādharas were victims of kidnapping by Ravana and receiving pressure from mount Mahendra while Hanuman tries to cross the ocean for helping Sita. In Mahābharata, Vidyādharas are following Indra to the serpent-sacrifice of Janamejaya. Besides the above scripts, Vidyādharas live in the palace of Kubera and has Chakradharman as a leader or live in the court of Indra under Vipracitti. In Hindu myth, Vidyādharas are the spirits of the air. They are shown watching combat, gazing at human competence with amazement, delight with music and hilarity, wearing a garland, and escaping with their wives from danger. In Mathura’s art, Vidyādharas were popular. There are Vidyādharas made of ceramic, sandstone, and metal.

Remarkably, Vidyādharas from the N1 temple were carved on the upper part of the lintel. Unfortunately, there are only two lintels in the north and a lintel in the west. The top part of the temple collapsed. However, the reliefs of Vidyādharas might be present on three sides. The three remaining flying Vidyādharas are facing one other. Vidyādhara on the northern lintel puts the left hand on the waist, the right-hand puts forward, and the left foot puts slightly in a squat position. Vidyādhara on the west’s lintel remains only left hand which raising upward. Vidyādharas has a beautiful design on the hair and the belt. These presentations might be illustrating a scene in Hindu myth. Unfortunately, the decay ruins the information.

The reliefs of Vidyādharas are rare in Sambo Prei Kuk, except N1 temple. In the same period, the 7th century, Vidyādharas appeared in Prasat Kuk Preah Theat Thom (Banteay Prei Nokor) and on an unknown lintel found the relief of Madhu and Kaidhabha, who are the thieves who stole the script of Brahma. They were carving in flying form similar to Vidyādharas. In the Angkorian period, reliefs of Vidyādharas appear on lintels to describe the scenes in Hindu myth, especially related to Shiva. For instance, the lintel of the Dhammanan temple shows meditating Shiva with two flying Vidyādharas.

In conclusion, the relief of Vidyādhara is rare in Sambo Prei Kuk and also rare in the Pre-Angkorian period. The reliefs show the influence of Indian art. Khmer artists in the past known in detail the divinities in Hinduism and beautifully showed them in art. The relief of Vidyādhara was rare in the 7th century but continued to appear in later periods with the various scenes and, mainly related to Shiva.
