Narasiṅha Bas-relief

Narasiṅha (Sanskrit: “Man-Lion”) was the fourth avatar of Vishnu in the form of half-man and half-lion, who appeared on earth to slay the evil ruler Hiranyakashipu (is an Asura from the Puranic scriptures of Hinduism). In the inscription, K. 151 from Robaṅ Romãs at Īśānapura (the archaeological site of Saṃbór Prei Kŭk) depicted presence that a certain called Narasiṅhagupta, who was vassal (samāntanṛpa) of the successive kings Bhavavarman, Mahendravarman (the ruling name of Citrasena) and Īśānavarman erected on 13 April 598 during the reign of Bhavavarman a figure of Kalpavāsudeva (Viṣṇu). Whereas other inscription K633 at Prah Khan temple revealed in Sanskrit: kamrateṅ Jagat narasiṅha, it means Viṣṇu in form Man-Lion.  Narasiṅha is symbolic divine as an embodiment of valor and martial strength. Narasiṅha is thus praised as the bringer of peace and order to the world of men. On the other hand, Narasiṅha is known primarily as the great protector who specifically defends and protects his devotee at times of need. If we see the myth of Bhagavata Purana depicted forms the background for the fourth avatar (Narasiṅha), of Lord Vishnu, which is well known to most Indians. That indicates the power of Narasiṅha which he tried to raise and protection of Hinduism.  However, a brief account of this will be in order here.

Hirayankashipu was a demon king ruling over the three worlds. After severe penance, he had sought a boon of immortality from Brahma. As absolute immortality was not possible, Brahma had granted a boon by which he would not be killed by either man or beast, in the day or in the night, inside the palace or outside. Confident of his immortality he continued his tyrannical rule overall. Hiranyakashipu abhorred Vishnu as Vishnu had killed his brother in the Varaha avatara. Therefore, He proscribed all religious activities especially Vishnu worship. Hiranyakashipu’s son, Prahalad was, however, an ardent devotee of Vishnu. The father’s several attempts including death threats, to wean the son away from Vishnu worship, did not deter the son from his devotion. However, Prahlada always managed miraculously to survive and continued to perform and promote the worship of Vishnu. Hiranyakashipu still infuriated by his son, asked his son if his Lord was everywhere, including the pillar in front. On Prahalad’s affirmative answer, Hiranyakashipu split the pillar with an axe. Immediately out emerged Narasiṅha forms a half-man and half-lion avatar of Vishnu. To save Prahlada and to vindicate his own insulted divinity, Vishnu decided to slay Hiranyakashipu. Narasiṅha took Hirnayakshipu on his lap, sat on the threshold, and killed him by splitting his torso and pulling out the entrails with his claws as Garuda. The unabated fury of Narasiṅha worried the devas and the devotees. The ardent appeal by Prahalad and the presence of Lakshmi calmed Narasiṅha and he appeared as Lakshmi Narasiṅha or Shantha Narasiṅha.

Narasiṅha in the Indian iconography is shown emerging form from a pillar to protect Prahlada from his father’s killing and it is in a similar fashion to the depiction of Shiva when he appeared in human form from the burning Linga pillar (Lingodhbavamurti). He is the most terrifying aspect of Vishnu and therefore comparable to the Rudic aspect of Shiva. In addition, the Indian iconography also described the activities of Narasiṅha. Furthermore, he may have either two or four arms. In the latter case, the upper right hand should hold the Chakra, and the upper left hand the Sakṅha, and the two other hands being stretched forward and supported on the knees. This form of the image of Narasiṅha is often designated as the Yoga-Narasiṅha. As for, the scene of Narasiṅha killed Hiranyakashipu, is only presented as in Khmer reliefs which it was carved on the lintel of the temple in form two arms. But it is only shown the act of fighting of Narasiṅha caught Hirnayakshipu on his thighs and killed him by splitting his torso and pulling out the disemboweling with his claws, as shown on the lintel of Einkosei temple at the eastern Gopura, and the most complete lintel is on the east side of the southern tower of Pre Rup temple but it lost a part of head Narasiṅha and this sculpture differs with another carving on the lintel as the right hand of Hirnayakshipu was rear of the right leg of Narasiṅha. Their feathers were fritted as parts due to the weathering and it stays for a century but we still can recognize this carving. Another example in which they have the good condition as on the lintel of East Mebon temple, the west Gopura of this enclosure shows Narasiṅha, Vishnu in a form of lion-headed, clawing the demon king. Moreover, at Banteay Srei temple is built largely of red sandstone in the 10th century, a medium that lends itself to the elaborate decorative wall carvings which are still observable today, as well as, the relief is perfectly showing on the pediment of northern long room between enclosure III and IV which depicted Narasiṅha slaying Hirnayakshipu tore to open with his claws the chest of a demon king, Hirangakashipu and died away.

Based on the study of Narasiṅha in which the fourth was half-animal and half-human of the avatar of Lord Vishnu was shown in Indian art mostly present as a single figure in a large sculpture which carved on the wall of monument and statue that illustrates the fierce in the scene fighting with Asura ruler Hirangakashipu. Moreover, Narasiṅha is also indicative of activities and multiple roles in Indian art. In contrast, the expression Narasiṅha in Khmer art is carved as relief mixed with the beautiful decoration, which we always see on the lintel and pediment a number of temples built in the Angkor period as revealed above. In addition, in Khmer relief we mostly see the relief of Narasinha carves in the small figures as on the lintel and pediment. Furthermore, we have never seen the relief of Narasiṅha in form a single figure in Khmer art. It is perhaps the first relief of Narasiṅha which is popularly carved on lintel or pediment of the temples in the 10th century.
