Khmer Court Dance as a Mirror of Khmer Identity

For the Khmer—an art-loving people—culture is not just to celebrate. It is a human expression and cultural identity. “Culture” is so important for the Khmer that one may come across slogans, such as “Culture is the soul of a nation.” Angkor Vatt temple symbolizes the culminating and opulent period of Khmer history and has been, for centuries, used as the Khmer national icon and edifice attested by its appearance on all flags of every Cambodia’s regime, past, and present including the Khmer Rouge, regardless their political ideologies. Culture must be preserved and protected, as it embodies the nation’s spirit, identity, and pride. On cultural education, it is essential that Khmer of all ages and walks of life be educated to better understand and appreciate the value of Cambodia’s ancient arts.

Khmer sculptors of the ancient Khmer Empire had carved 1,787 exquisite apsara figures on the stone murals of the Khmer temples in the Angkor vicinity and beyond.

Performing arts in Cambodia are originated in religion, tradition, custom, belief, and nature among which the Khmer live. They include storytelling, epic singing, repartee singing, and several theaters and dances, namely, the Khmer Royal Ballet or Khmer court dance. Khmer court dance peaked during the Angkor period (ninth to fifteenth centuries) and again during the second half of the twentieth century when dancers attained perfection yet to be surpassed. Up to 1970, it was performed virtually by a single troupe resident in the royal palace in Phnom Penh, then from 1970 to 1975 at the University of Fine Arts. As the most formal form of Khmer performing art, it has been perceived by the Khmer to be the symbol and legacy of the powerful and opulent culture of Angkor. The dance itself has reflected the socio-religious, -political, and -cultural life of the Khmer ever since its inception. In 2003, the Khmer Royal Ballet or Khmer court dance was enlisted on the UNESCO list of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

While writing this article, I am aware of the fact that using the court tradition as a tool for social analysis could be controversial, as Lockard once claimed that folk [not court] culture has long been considered to be an authentic reflection of the soul of society.

Angkor recalls an age that is millennia away from us in spirit; the spirit that has animated one of the most ancient civilizations in the world. It is lost today, some say. In the 1990s, as Cambodia moved toward the restoration of social harmony, the court dance remains a symbol of new life and strength in Khmer society as it has for over a thousand years. Today, Khmer court dance, traditionally based in the royal palace, is taking on new meaning as an egalitarian art-form supported by Khmer of all classes and walks of life, and it is not uncommon to find music and dance groups wherever the Khmer live. In this new context, the Khmer feel they own the court tradition and consequently participate more actively in its transmission, practice, and performance.

Even in the midst of life-threatening conditions and extreme poverty, immediately following the Khmer Rouge period, Khmer artists continue to practice their arts to their full capacity as they believe that art is the “soul” of the people and nation. Losing the art is losing the soul or the Angkor Vatt itself. Compared to their neighbors, the Khmer seem to excel in the field of art. For instance, in the United States, the Vietnamese are known to be pioneers of popular music; the Hmong are masters of needlework; while the Khmer are the preservers and carriers of the traditional arts.

The earlier Khmer court dance bore a sacred character and value as an essential religious rite associated with funeral and fertility, ancestor worship, temple and religious offerings and prayers, politics, and entertainment. The religious function of the dance has been gradually diminished and changed to virtual entertainment today.  However, the religious aspect has not been abandoned completely, except by the Khmer Rouge. In a larger spectrum and deeper sense of symbolism, Khmer court dance has always been a national pride of the Khmer. In the old time, it was a symbol of royalty and the aristocracy and was used as an offering to the supernatural to secure the king’s power. In the modern era, court dance is considered to be for the benefit of mass culture. Its form remains consistently the same, and it can be seen as a mirror of Khmer heritage and still inspires the cultural identity of the Khmer people.

Art shapes and forms our positive mentality and attitude to be peaceful, respected, and responsible people. It makes the community and society a better place for us to live and enjoy. We are constantly reminded of the slogan “Culture is the soul of a nation.” Khmer culture is the soul of Cambodia and the Khmer people. In the process of globalization, as the world tempo accelerates, the density level increases, our active participation in globalization in a new life, the change of traditional context and value is not only inevitable but necessary.

In the trend of globalization, time equates with money. The world societies gradually move away from the spiritual to the materialistic realm, from religious to secular. We have invested in the future and made our great efforts in the preservation and maintenance of our priceless cultural heritage and to leave for the next generations a better world with a meaningful, colorful, dynamic, and vibrant life reflected, for instance, by the Khmer court dance being the epitome of Khmer national identity.
