KUMBHAKĀRNA IN KHMER PERFORMING ARTS

The Reamker or Ramayana is one of the most popular and exciting stories in the world. Its popularity is attested by the adoption and adaptation of regional and local stories, particularly, in the Indianized states of Southeast Asia.

The Khmer Reamker has served as the main theme for the development of many Khmer arts, including sculpture, painting, drawing, fresco, temple murals, canvases, scrolls, stampings, children books, weaving and silk-screening, court dance drama, masked play, shadow play, epic singing, story-telling, and astrology. For this brief article, I shall only focus on one of the most popular characters, t.e., Kumbhakārna (Kumphakar).

In Khmer masked play, known locally as lkhaon khaol, a male dance-theater form, the Reamker is the sole story used as its story-base, although never before has the complete story been performed. Only a few episodes are chosen and adapted for the play. The most popular one for this theatrical form is The Water Barrage of Kumphakar (Kumphakar Tup Toeuk) also known as The Battle of Kumphakar (Chambaing Kumphakar).

In the past, the Khmer masked play was performed at national and religious ceremonies as well as during drought to invoke rainfall for the village and agriculture. In such a context, the performing troupe staged the episode of The Water Barrage of Kumbhakārna, believing that Kumbhakārna, the gigantic demon, enlarged his colossal body, spreading his legs wide to block the water-flow, thus creating the drought. The death of Kumbhakārna allowed the water to flow freely again.

In the Ramayana story, Kumbhakārna was not slain at the time he sit as the water-barrage, rather, he was slain by Preah Leak (Sam 2004: 103).

Kumbhakārna, a gigantic light green demon with four faces, is the son of Lastian and Atula, and the younger brother and advisor of Reap (Sam 2004: 103). “Kumbha” means “jar” or “pot” whereas “kārna” means “ear;” thus, Kumbhakārna means “having ears like a pot” (Reamker 1964: 3-5; Chuon Nath: 1967: 42; Sam 2004: 103). Kumbhakārna is a general crown prince. Lord Brahma bestowed him with a powerful club (Chheng 1998: 36). In the Khmer version of Reamker, Kumbhakārna was slain by Preah Leak (Chheng 1998: 39; Sam 2004: 103). Whereas in the Indian and Thai versions, Kumbhakārna was slain by Rama (King Rama I, 2002 [1807]: 73; Beach 1983: 46; Narayan 1972: 148; Gaer 1954: 159; Sam 2004: 103).
