Belief in the dead in the Khe Chet (Lunar Khmer month)

People in different areas of course often hold funerals for the dead according to their own views, characteristics, and family beliefs, especially follow the arrangements of the Achar Khmaoch. The funeral ceremony is usually held in different areas, regardless of time or place. On the other hand, villagers in the southern part of Siem Reap, especially Spean Chreav village, Kranh village, Krasaing Roleung village, Wat Po Krom village, Boeung village, Aranya Sakor village, etc., There are always different beliefs about human death. Each ceremony in the funerals always is decided by the four of Achar Yogis and Achar Phlouk. People in all of the above villages have a belief in the dead, especially related to the place where hold the ceremony. This article is going to draw on the belief in the dead in Khe Chet (Khmer month) at the southern part of Siem Reap, where villagers continue to practice their beliefs, customs, and traditions. Their beliefs about the above villagers are related to three types of death:

Death from illness at home
If a person becomes ill and waits for death then can no longer live for a long time. The family will organize a sutra or Dharma ceremony (called a sutra ceremony) by inviting one Achar Yogi and four Achar Plock to prepare various utensils for worship which keep them next to the believers and invited monks to pray (three times in the evening), whereas the group of Achar will sutras (Dharmmanun) for every evening and night until the patient died. Thus funeral ceremony can be held at home.

Death due to illness outside the home
If someone dies outside the home, we can say that the patient died in a hospital or other accident, then the body will be taken to the Dhammasala (usually in each of the above villages there is a Dhammasala for various ceremonies, including funerals) because they think it is not good for the family or bring unhappiness. However, some families take the corpse to be held the funeral ceremony at home, but they set up a shed by placing the corpse for the funeral.

Death by suicide (Taihong corpse)
Taihong corpse refers to a person who commits suicide by hanging. Most of the villagers do not take the body to the funeral at home and do not hold any big ceremony, just invite the monks and Achars to pray and then bury the body to wait for a good time to remove the bones to cremate again (called the Bone Funeral). Ordinarily, for bone funeral ceremonies, they are done together, with many bones being cremated next to each other, sometimes between 20 and 30 corpses. Importantly, they were not allowed to hang the bones of the corpse who had committed suicide by hanging, that is, the family of the deceased who died by hanging must perform a separate ceremony alone. In some areas (especially north of Angkor Thom), suicide corpses are often buried or burned where was suicide without the need for monks or Achars to pray, and if the cremation is done, the bone will be collected for further ceremonies.

Death in Khe Cheat
The people in these villages still strongly believe in the death of people, whether at home or outdoors (except for the Taihong corpse) in the Khe Chet ( Lunar Khmer month between March and April). It is a special point that we have never encountered in any other area. What is important is related to cremate and Pre Rub (which is one of the most important Bidhī Chlaṅ Văy in the Khmer life cycle). The corpse families often perform cremation and Pre Rub ceremony to preserve the bone or bury it in the stupa. But if a person dies during the Khe Chet (from 1 to 15 lunar Khmer months), Achar will not perform the cremation, because it is believed that the Khe Chet is a very hot month, it will afflict the soul of the corpse, especially lead very irritated to the family. A funeral ceremony can be arranged as usual. If a family has enough money to pay for the ceremony (sometimes 1 or 2 weeks or more), they will hold the funeral until the Khe Chet to be cremated and Pre Rub ceremony. For the poor or those who do not have the money to pay for a long funeral ceremony, they will bury the body and wait for a good time and dig out the bones to be cremated, and Pre Rub ceremony again. Thus, for people who die in the Khe Chet, the Achar decides on the family members of the corpse with two options: the first option is a long funeral ceremony until finishing the Khe Chet. The second is to bury the corpse and wait for a good time to hold the funeral ceremony. To the normal funeral ceremony, but there are some points that the Achar does differently from the funeral ceremony that does not die in the Khe Chet.

In summary, this is the first survey article on the funeral ceremony of the dead in Khe Chet of villages above. We will study in detail the various ceremonies of the funeral in the Khe Chet, why the Achar in the area requires such a ritual.
