Khmer Reamker and Its Original Music Accompaniment

Ramayana is a two-thousand-year-old Indian epic, by the poet Valmiki, a 48,000-line epic odyssey (or 24,000 Sanskrit verses) (Tranet 1999: 1; Narayan 1972: xi; Gaer 1954: x; Menen 1954: 9), with an essentially moral tale, describing the adventures of Prince Rāma, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. This incredibly lengthy epic has been perceived to be not a fact but rather an idea, not scientific but philosophical and moralistic. It contains all in its plots: war, adventure, romance, fantasy, religion, and philosophy both in heaven and on earth. Referring to Ramayana, Jonah Blank wrote: “Imagine a story that is the Odyssey, Aesop’s fables, Romeo and Juliet, the Bible, and Star Wars all at the same time” (1992: ix). However, the central subject matter of the Reamker revolves around the wars and conflicts between Preah Ream (Rāma) (King of Ayuthyea) and Reap (Rāvana) (King of the Island of Lanka), who had abducted Sita (Preah Ream’s wife) and took her to Lanka.

The Khmer Reamker is believed to have been a vast body of poem. Unfortunately, only a small part of it remains. The earliest edition in Khmer was published by the Royal Library in Phnom Penh in 1937, comprising sixteen booklets numbering 1-10 and 75-80. These booklets correspond with two manuscripts on leaves of latanier in the collection of H. R. H. Prince Vaddhachhayavung. Therefore, about four-fifths of this invaluable work was lost. We can surmise that the Reamker is the grandest Khmer literary works, in language, style, and artistic imagination. François Martini speculated that the author must have been highly educated and a great poet that no other writer, who followed, has come close to this writer’s facility and breath (Martini 1978: xv). This masterwork of vast battle scenes presents an extraordinarily rich vocabulary and an extremely supple language. Its imagination is lively and complete in the details.

The Reamker is not in any way a mere translation from the original Sanskrit poems into the Khmer language. The local Khmer folklore has been richly incorporated into the story. Comparing the Sanskrit and Khmer versions, Martini even ventured so far as to claim that the Khmer Reamker was an autonomous creation altogether and its author was inspired by traditions other than that of Valmiki and that the Khmer version was closer to the Indonesian version than the Indian (1978: xvi). Therefore, there are differences and discrepancies in the different versions, for instance, in the birth of Sita.

There were 56 music pieces and three music calls used in the original Khmer Reamker. The pieces are: Klamm, Krao Nak, Khenn Ma, Khaom, Kory, Chrachuh, Chramm, Chramm Taeng, Chrah, Chrah Chuk, Chrah Taeng, Chhann, Chha, Chhnan, Chunamea, Cheut, Cheut Chhing, Chum Prey, Chumhean Thomm, Damnak, Nansey, Tuong Preah Theat, Trah, Thayay, Tha Bien Prakrap, Tha Pen, Trung Kroeurng, Thon, Banakk, Benn Nak, Bamroeu, Punhea, Punhea Doeur, Punhea Saok, Pileap, Yeani, Reay, Lea, Samai, Samdech, Samdech Phean, Samkar, Samna, Samna Kham, Samna Khmer, Samna Morn, Samna Siem, Samna Siem Sott, Samrang, Sdech Lelea, Smoeung Thang, Smoeu, Loeung Rott, Aot, Aot Siem, and Aek Batt. Whereas the calls are: Prakum, Peat Daek, and Lbang Kann. It is noticeable and saddened that we, the Khmer, have lost so many music and songs, shrinking our ancient and traditional music repertoire due to various reasons, in general, and the accompaniment pieces of Reamker mentioned above, in particular. Moving forward, it is important that we learn, practice, and document the pieces to preserve them for the future.
